名詞中心・受動態構文を避けて動詞中心・能動態構文を使う

私を含め、無意識のうちに名詞中心構文で文章を書いている人が多いようだ。これは英語に限らず、日本語でもそうである。名詞中心構文と動詞中心構文の例を挙げる。

• 作業を実施する → 作業する
• アップグレードを行う → アップグレードする

日本語の場合、「実施する」「行う」を使うことで堅い表現になる。ビジネス文書でよく見かけるのはそのせいだろう。

ここまで書いて、前段落の第一文も名詞中心構文だと気がついた。「使う」という動詞に「こと」を付けて名詞化している。「～を使うと堅い表現になる」でも何ら問題ないが、このブログの文体を意図的に堅めにしているので、ついつい使ってしまったようだ。

閑話休題。英語の場合も、わかりやすい文章は「動詞中心構文」と「能動態」を心がけよとされている。

名詞中心構文は単語が長くて読みづらい。

• intall → installation
• collect → collection
• identify → identification

日本人は、冠詞に何を使うべきかという非常に大きな悩みも出てくる。たとえば次の3つのどれが正しいのだろうか。

• We did the installation of the system.
• We did an installation of the system.
• We did installation of the systemか.

動詞中心構文なら「We installed the system.」で決まりだ。冠詞を使う場所が減れば、悩む回数も減る。

受動態のデメリットは2つある。ひとつは文が確実に長くなるということ。

• The student wrote the report.（5語）
• The report was written by the student. （7語）

もうひとつは動作の主体が不明確になるということ。もっとも、意図的にそうする場合もある。動作主体を明確にすると、文が直接的すぎて、誰かの責任を問うニュアンスになりかねないときだ。あるいは、自分の意見であることをはっきりと出したくない場合だ。

英語圏の人が書いたと思われるビジネスライティングの解説を引用する。この人は、受動態構文を「one of the all-time worst offenders（いつの時代でも最悪な犯人の一人）」とまで書いているが、同時に「Don't get the idea that the passive voice is always wrong（受動態が常に悪いと考えないこと」と釘を刺している。

Revise weak passive-voice sentences

One of the all-time worst offenders for creating unclear, wordy, indirect writing is the passive-voice construction. It's easy enough to convert a sentence from active voice to passive voice, and back again:

Don't get the idea that the passive voice is always wrong and should never be used. It is a good writing technique when we don't want to be bothered with an obvious or too-often-repeated subject and when we need to rearrange words in a sentence for emphasis.

最後に例題として、名詞中心・受動態の文を動詞中心・能動態で書き換えてみる。

• The log collection was executed. （ログ収集を実施した）
• The replacement of the system was performed. （システムの効果を実行した）
• The test about the new configuration was perfrmed yesterday. （新しい構成のテストが昨日実行された）

次のように書き換えると、日本語も英語もすっきりする。

• We collected the log. （ログを収集した）
• We replaced the system. （システムを交換した）
• The customer tested the new configuration yesterday. （昨日、顧客が新しい構成をテストした）
