「作業する」の英語表現

「作業を来週実行し、終了後に状況を知らせる」といった文章を日本語で書くことが多い。作業というのは、パッチ適用だったり、設定変更だったり、ハードウェアの増設だったり、単なる稼働状態の確認だったり、様々だ。これを英語で書く場合、「作業」を「work」とする人を見かけるが、何をやるのか漠然としているし、名詞用法のworkはあまり見かけない。「テスト」「構成変更」「ハードウェアを交換」などと言い換え、さらに動詞構文にするとわかりやすくなる。

• I will run some tests sometime next week.  I will update the ticket after I finish it.
• I will change the settings .....
• I will visit the customer site and check the system status tomorrow....

名詞用法のworkの例ももちろんあるが、作業というかしこまった表現ではなく、「やること、やったこと」といったニュアンスではないかと思う。手元のメールから2例引用する。

• John has been doing some work in this area.
• I was doing some work on Flash files on the network this morning.

次の文はWebのニュースメディアからの引用である。「it still has some work to do」は「作業がまだ残っている」ではなく、「やるべきことがまだ残っている」と訳すべきところだろう。

If EMC set out to improve its Clariion AX150, then it succeeded with the AX4 it launched this week. But if it wants to offer a system optimized for SMBs, then it still has some work to do.
